From 3–6 March, BCSDN carried out its annual advocacy mission to Brussels at a pivotal moment for EU democracy initiatives and enlargement policy. As the EU moves to operationalize the Civil Society Strategy and the European Democracy Shield, while preparing the next Multiannual Financial Framework (2028–2034), BCSDN engaged with European Commission representatives, Members of the European Parliament and partner civil society networks to ensure that perspectives from the Western Balkans and Türkiye are reflected in these emerging frameworks. Discussions focused on strengthening structured participation of civil society in EU democracy mechanisms, protecting civic space and improving early warning approaches to democratic threats. Meetings with MEPs and Commission officials also addressed the future of civil society funding, particularly as EU support shifts from the Instrument for Pre-Accession Assistance to broader frameworks such as Global Europe. The mission concluded with exchanges with the European Civic Forum and BCSDN members, reaffirming the importance of sustained dialogue to ensure enlargement civil society remains a partner in Europe’s democratic resilience.
