A recent report published by International Civil Society Sector (ICSC) explores how civil society, including NGOs, community groups, and citizens’ organisations, could evolve over the next 20 years as the world faces growing uncertainty from climate change, conflicts, digital risks, and declining international funding. The report notes that the current aid system is still largely controlled by major donors and international NGOs, but trust in this model is weakening. At the same time, new approaches are emerging, such as community-led initiatives, local philanthropy, and stronger cooperation among actors in the Global South. Looking ahead to 2046, the report outlines several possible futures depending on how power and resources are distributed. It concludes that strengthening local leadership, providing flexible long-term funding, and protecting civic space will be essential for building a more resilient and inclusive civil society.
