National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs) are an essential part of the country-level human rights protection system and have a pivotal role in navigating the everyday human rights challenges. The report marks such bodies in the EU and North Macedonia, Serbia, and the UK. It explores crucial developments, challenges to their effectiveness, and ways to maximize their impact. It also presents practices and potential for greater engagement, such as the role of the NHRIs in supporting monitoring of the rule of law and compliance with the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights. FRA’s findings emphasize that NHRIs need a clear mandate, independence, adequate resources, and, in their memberships, to reflect the societies’ diversity. They also need to comply with the Paris Principles on the independence and effectiveness of NHRIs endorsed by the United Nations. Read more here.
