On June 11-12, the International Conference on Freedom of Association took place in Istanbul, bringing together experts from Turkey, Europe, the Balkans, and the USA. Hosted by BCSDN Turkish member TÜSEV, and STGM, the event addressed the global impact of laws and practices regulating freedom of association on civic space and how civil society is adapting to changing realities.
During the session titled “Global Civil Society Agenda and the Role of International Organizations in Safeguarding Civil Society,” BCSDN Executive Director Ms. Biljana Spasovska shared insights into the multifaceted challenges regarding Freedom of Association in the Western Balkan region. Drawing from BCSDN’s extensive monitoring of the civil society enabling environment, Ms. Spasovska emphasized the importance of joint evidence-based advocacy, expert exchange, and peer learning among members. Her presentation highlighted how BCSDN’s work serves as a critical resource for CSOs aiming to navigate and address these challenges effectively. Ms. Rana Kotan the Executive Director of TÜSEV, as the event’s host and moderator of the session, contributed to the discussion, focusing on the collaborative efforts required to safeguard civil society and the impact of international organizations in this regard.
In addition to this session, the conference included various other thought-provoking discussions. Notably, Ms. Dajana Cvjetkovic from BCSDN member Center for Civil Society Promotion (CPCD) participated in the session on “Civil Society Resilience in e Face of Adversity,” where she discussed how CSOs in Bosnia and Herzegovina have demonstrated resilience amid various challenges. Ms. Güneş Engin from TÜSEV took part in the session on “The Impact of New Technologies on Civil Society,” exploring how technological advancements affect CSOs. Other sessions at the conference introduced innovative concepts and approaches to addressing the challenges faced by democracies and examined the global impact of legal frameworks on civil society activities. Furthermore, discussions highlighted how CSOs around the world are adapting and thriving despite significant obstacles.
The conference proved to be a significant platform for exchanging ideas and best practices, fostering collaboration among CSOs, and strengthening the global civil society agenda. BCSDN’s active participation highlighted its ongoing commitment to enhancing the enabling environment for civil society across the Balkans and beyond.
