Serbian authorities’ crackdown on civic space has now extended beyond its borders, obstructing foreign activists and CSOs from participating in public debates. On January 22, 14 EU and Western Balkans activists- participants of the Erste Foundation NGO Academy visit were detained, expelled, and labeled a “security risk” without evidence. Following mass protests in Serbia demanding transparency and accountability, the government has intensified repression through arrests, intimidation, and now external restrictions. In response to this incident, CSOs across the region and the EU, including BCSDN, have signed an open letter urging Serbian authorities to explain these unjust actions and ensure respect for human rights and freedoms, in line with Serbia’s EU integration process. The letter also calls on EU institutions and member states to hold Serbia accountable and demand adherence to European values enshrined in the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights. Find more here.
