The International Press Institute (IPI) and the Media and Journalism Research Center (MJRC) report assesses media capture in Romania. The analysis highlights the political influence over Romania’s media regulators, including the National Audiovisual Council (CNA), and the challenges facing public service broadcasters like the Romanian Television Company (TVR) and the Romanian Radio Broadcasting Company (SRR). These issues include political interference, corruption, and a lack of critical journalism. The report also identifies the misuse of state funds to sway media output and the concentration of media ownership, which limits independent outlets. Recommendations call for reforms to strengthen the independence of the CNA and public broadcasters, increase transparency in state advertising, and enhance media pluralism. These changes aim to align Romania’s media landscape with the European Media Freedom Act (EMFA). Read more here.
