European CSOs have raised alarm after a US congressional report on alleged EU “censorship” published thousands of emails with the names of EU Commission officials and NGO staff visible, while tech company employees’ identities were redacted. The House Judiciary Committee report, based on subpoenaed communications with platforms such as Google, Meta and TikTok, is seen by critics as applying double standards and potentially conflicting with GDPR data-protection principles. Civil society representatives warn the exposure could endanger individuals and discourage participation in future EU initiatives on platform accountability. Some named individuals described the publication as a breach of confidentiality and personal safety, with at least one reconsidering travel to the US. The European Commission has not publicly defended those identified, raising concerns about a chilling effect on future cooperation. Read more here.
