A new report by Peace Direct warns that deep cuts to international aid funding, including the dismantling of USAID in 2025, are accelerating a major crisis across humanitarian, development, and peacebuilding sectors. Based on consultations with more than 400 activists, peacebuilders, and civil society actors from the Global South, the report argues that the current moment should serve not only as a warning, but also as an opportunity to rethink international cooperation and move away from unequal, colonial aid structures. The findings highlight growing demands for locally led funding, stronger South–South cooperation, flexible support mechanisms, and community-driven governance models. The report calls on both Global North and Global South actors to rebuild trust, shift power and decision-making closer to communities, and create a more equitable system centred on solidarity, dignity, and long-term resilience.
