In 2025, the EU has a unique opportunity to push forward Balkan integration. The removal of land borders between Bulgaria, Romania, and the Schengen area marks a significant step towards full integration, with economic benefits for businesses and citizens. Additionally, Bulgaria’s long-awaited entry into the eurozone is set for 2026, offering economic stability and growth. With three negotiating chapters closed in December 2024, seven more expected in 2025, and EU membership targeted for 2028, Montenegro exemplifies Brussels’ commitment to making enlargement a tangible goal for the Balkans. Albania and North Macedonia are also pursuing EU accession, with 2025 presenting a chance to accelerate reforms and overcome obstacles. By supporting these efforts, the EU can reaffirm its commitment to enlargement, strengthen ties with the Balkans, and, with the right reforms, incentives, and political will, make 2025 a golden opportunity to integrate current and future members, signaling its return to the region.
