Europe’s media freedom landscape remained under pressure in 2025, with continued attacks, legal intimidation, and political interference affecting journalists and media organisations. The Media Freedom Rapid Response (MFRR) annual monitoring report, produced by the European Centre for Press and Media Freedom, the European Federation of Journalists, and the International Press Institute, documents 1,481 press freedom violations affecting 2,377 media-related persons or entities across 36 European countries. Private individuals were identified as the largest group of perpetrators, followed by government and public officials, whose involvement in attacks has increased in recent years. Serbia recorded the highest number of violations, with 208 cases affecting 358 media actors. The report also highlights growing risks linked to foreign agent legislation, SLAPP lawsuits, and narratives targeting independent media funding across several European countries. Read more here.
