18.06.2025, Skopje, North Macedonia – The energy was palpable as the Civic Space Hackathon in Skopje wrapped up after an intense and inspiring few days. The event brought together a diverse group of passionate individuals from across the Western Balkans – civic activists, tech experts, legal professionals, communicators, and designers – all united by a common goal: to strengthen civil society in a region facing significant challenges.

The hackathon directly addressed the double pressure currently weighing on civil society organizations (CSOs) in the Western Balkans: the erosion of public trust due to pervasive smear campaigns and disinformation, and the undermining of CSO independence through restrictive and politicized funding practices. Recognizing that weakened trust leads to diminished support, financial instability increases vulnerability, and a lack of transparency can allow inauthentic organizations to thrive, the participants embarked on a mission to “flip the script.”

Over the course of the event, teams dove deep into brainstorming and prototyping potential solutions. Guided by experienced mentors, they tackled key areas identified as crucial for bolstering civic resilience. The innovative ideas that emerged focused on:
- Detecting, exposing, and countering smear campaigns through cutting-edge tools and strategies.
- Building strategic communication and narrative resilience to combat disinformation effectively.
- Fostering cross-border solidarity and real-time response networks to support CSOs facing threats.
- Creating open tools for transparent public funding tracking to enhance accountability.
- Promoting public trust and strengthening grassroots philanthropy to diversify support for civil society organizations (CSOs).
- Reimagining sustainable resource models for civil society to ensure long-term independence.
The hackathon fostered a dynamic environment where initial concepts were not only shared but also rigorously questioned, strengthened, and even reimagined based on collective input and shared experiences. The teams, Blink 42-21, BONEVET, In Time, Active Zone, and IPAK Center, embraced the collaborative spirit, moving from initial sparks of inspiration to the development of tangible prototypes with the support of their mentors.
The culmination of the hackathon recognized the most promising and impactful solutions. At the same time, all participants demonstrated incredible dedication and creativity; the awarded projects showcased particularly innovative approaches to addressing the challenges at hand. The winner and the prize of € 3,500 went to Blink 42-21, as decided by the jury. Second place and € 2,000 were awarded to IPAC.
The BCSDN Civic Space Hackathon served as a powerful reminder of the ingenuity and commitment within the civil society sector of the Western Balkans. By creating a space for collaboration and innovation, the event has laid the groundwork for tangible solutions that can contribute to a more resilient, transparent, and impactful civil society in the region. The energy and ideas generated in Skopje are set to ripple outwards, fueling the ongoing efforts to strengthen civic space and empower those working for positive change.
