Freedom House’s Freedom in the World 2026 report confirms a continued global decline in political rights and civil liberties for the 20th consecutive year, with 54 countries deteriorating and only 35 improving, while just 21% of the world’s population lives in “Free” countries. The decline is driven by armed conflict, attacks on democratic institutions, and growing authoritarian repression, with media freedom, freedom of expression, and due process among the most affected areas. Within this context, the Western Balkans continues to face persistent challenges, with most countries remaining “Partly Free” and progress uneven. Key issues include political pressure on institutions, weak judicial independence, corruption, and constraints on media and civil society. The report calls for stronger democratic coordination, more strategic and diversified support for democracy, and greater engagement with younger generations, stressing that sustained reforms and international support are essential to counter backsliding and protect fundamental freedoms.
