At the European Commission’s annual Rule of Law report meeting, Civil Society Europe (CSE) called for urgent protection of civic space and fundamental rights. Co-chaired by CSE and Caroline Hansen from the Human Rights and Democracy Network (HRDN), the session emphasized coordinated efforts in Brussels and across Europe to safeguard democracy against political threats. Reflecting on Italy’s Liberation Day, a CSE representative quoted Giuseppe Dossetti, stressing the need for citizens to resist violations of their constitutional freedoms. With the 2025 Rule of Law Report approaching, political dynamics in the EU are empowering forces that undermine the rule of law. In several Member States, defenders of democracy are labeled “terrorists” or “foreign agents,” raising concerns among civil society organizations. The report highlighted global trends, such as Donald Trump’s return to power and his attacks on human rights, resonating in European politics. In response, CSE and HRDN urged the European Commission to enhance its Rule of Law Cycle and act decisively against violations, warning that the EU’s credibility is at stake as these issues persist.
