Following the March 15 protest in Belgrade, CSOs have filed a criminal complaint for terrorism after an unidentified sonic device disrupted the peaceful gathering during a 15-minute silence. The incident that triggered panic, a stampede, and numerous injuries among the hundreds of thousands present. Witnesses described a deafening sound similar to a low-flying aircraft, often accompanied by heatwaves and disorientation. A collective of CSOs, including Civic Initiatives, CRTA, YUCOM, FemPlatz, A11, and the Belgrade Centre for Human Rights, gathered over 3,500 testimonies in just 30 hours through a public questionnaire. The data was processed by researchers at Zvuk Labs, who analysed detailed accounts of physical and psychological effects, classifying symptoms such as panic, hearing loss, chest pain, confusion, and trauma. The incident is believed to be the first mass civilian exposure to an acoustic weapon in Serbia’s recent history, prompting urgent calls for investigation and international scrutiny. Read more here.
