On the International Day for Multilateralism on 24 April, a group of 100 CSOs, led by CIVICUS, Democracy International, and Democracy Without Borders, in a joint statement under the name “We the Peoples,” requests on the UN to implement three reforms, so that the people, elected representatives, and civil society will have a stronger voice and greater influence. At first, points that the World Citizens’ Initiative enables citizens to contribute to the agenda of the UN General Assembly or the UN Security Council. Secondly, it promotes that creating a UN Parliamentary Assembly composed of elected representatives operate as a watchdog and reflect a diversity of global viewpoints. Finally, it recommends establishing a UN Civil Society Envoy and implementing a strategy for opening up the UN to people’s participation and civil society. The document reflects that changes “will enhance the legitimacy of global governance and facilitate its transformational potential”. Read more and endorse the statement here.
