The CASE coalition, a network of organizations combating SLAPP lawsuits in Europe, has released an updated report detailing SLAPPs prevalence and impact. SLAPP suits are legal actions designed to intimidate media outlets and individuals into silence, rather than seeking legitimate legal outcomes. The report reveals that over 250 SLAPP cases were documented in the past year, with Serbia ranking high on the list alongside Croatia, Slovenia, and BiH. These lawsuits primarily target journalists, media organizations, activists, and NGOs, often focusing on issues like corruption, government actions, business practices, and environmental concerns. While the report sheds light on the extent of the issue, it acknowledges that many cases go unreported. The research underscores the urgent need for robust anti-SLAPP legislation to protect freedom of speech and the right to information across Europe. Read more here.
