Protests in Sarajevo erupted after a fatal tram accident on 12 February that killed a 23-year-old student and seriously injured several others. The tragedy has galvanised a new generation of young people, demanding accountability, safer public transport, and broader systemic change in a country widely seen as struggling with dysfunctional governance. Daily demonstrations led by informal youth groups have drawn thousands near the crash site and government institutions, calling for full transparency in the investigation, the withdrawal of unsafe vehicles, and systemic responsibility for public transport management. The Kuća ljudskih prava Banja Luka expressed support for peaceful protests, called for authorities to ensure accountability, urged police to allow peaceful demonstrations without force, and emphasised the importance of young people’s voices in defending justice, and rule of law.
