Bosnia’s Federation House of Representatives unanimously adopted a new Law on Protection against Domestic Violence and Violence against Women. The law strengthens police powers, allowing them to intervene swiftly, detain suspects for 48 hours, and use electronic monitoring devices on offenders with restraining orders. This law aims to align with the Council of Europe’s Convention on Preventing and Combating Violence against Women. It includes urgent protection measures for victims, sets up a 24-hour anonymous SOS hotline, and introduces new regulations for social work, police, and judicial institutions. While the law still needs approval from the House of Peoples in the entry, amendments to the entity criminal code introducing a new offense of femicide were meantime withdrawn from the agenda, drawing disapproval among some parliament members.
