A group of Albanian CSOs, committed to democratic, social, and economic development, as well as the country’s European integration, including BCSDN member Partners Albania for Change and Development, call on EU institutions, member states, and civil society supporters to address the growing challenges threatening civil society’s essential role. The letter states that the withdrawal of key donors, including EU countries and the U.S. Government, has led to the closure of critical programs in democracy, human rights, environmental protection, education, and socio-economic development. It warns that the progress achieved in justice reform, investigative journalism, transparency, and public accountability is now at risk, weakening civil society’s influence on policymakers. The letter highlights that, alongside funding cuts, an unprecedented campaign of disinformation, defamation, and politically motivated attacks has intensified, spreading across the Western Balkans. It urges EU institutions and member states to provide immediate political and financial support to safeguard civil society’s role and ensure its contribution to democratic reforms.
