Philea, through the Journalism Funders Forum, has released a new report examining how philanthropic organisations are funding journalism and media in Europe. The study highlights that while the field is widely recognised as essential for democracy, accountability, and countering misinformation, it receives only a small portion of philanthropic budgets. Despite this, there is a slow but visible increase in investment, with a shift toward more flexible, long-term support as the sector navigates changing media landscapes, unstable business models, and growing threats to independent journalism. Based on data from 36 funders across 12 countries, the report shows that funding remains limited at 3.2% of total budgets but is diverse, evolving, and increasingly guided by concerns about democracy, misinformation, and the sustainability of independent media.
