Foundations are all confronted with their grantees’ internal capacity issues yet can be at a loss on how to best support them – and do so in a way that does not reinforce the existing imbalance of power. The event held by the Philea Organisational Development (OD) Community of Practice in March, centered on the issue of “power” and how it manifests in grantmaker-grantee relations created a safe space to share challenges and hear from peers. The goal was to offer an array of innovative methodologies suitable for a diverse range of funders at various stages of their organizational development journeys. Some funds engage in comprehensive transformation processes like strategy development, organizational restructuring, or internal systems enhancements. Others focus on traditional capacity-building support, while some grantmakers have yet to address the crucial aspect of ‘power’ and its dynamics within grantmaker-grantee relationships.
