Ms Blerjana Bino, one of the SBPPF grantees from Albania, on the 3rd of May 2014, held a public presentation of the policy paper “Countering Marginalization through Discourse: The Limits of the Public Sphere and the Potential of Alternative Media”. The event was hosted at the European University of Tirana, within the framework of the International Conference on Albanian Studies Days 1-4 May 2014.
The Paper explores the ways in which various forms of alternative media could contribute to countering marginalization through the production of alternative discourses and the potential of alternative media, such as a Community Radio, to producing counter discourses and constructing subaltern counter publics rather that “the public sphere”.
Ms Bino presented the Paper at a panel session of the Department of Public Relations and Communication, while the keynote speaker, Mr Gyula Hegyi, a former member of the EU Parliament, elaborated on the media and political system and the Roma issues in Hungary. The discussions involved marginalized community issues in Albania and Europe at large, with a focus on media. The event was attended by representatives from CSOs in Albania, the Commission for EU Integration at the Albanian Parliament, researchers on communication, lecturers and representatives from the elite Roma students.
