The International Press Institute, IPI, expressed concerns after the Slovenian Prime Minister on his Twitter account attacked the director of the Slovenian Press Agency, STA, of being a ‘collaborator’ in the ‘murder’ of a former STA editor. The observers also claimed that the Slovenian government is putting pressure on the agency to change its editorial policy by weaponizing its funding. Precisely, Government Communications Office, UKOM, suspended STA funding because it has failed to deliver documents based to determine a fair financing arrangement. To help STA survive, the Slovene Association of Journalists and STA’s supporters started a crowdfunding campaign to raise 2 million EUR for public service performance. Many local and international press freedom watchdog organizations earlier accused the Slovenian prime minister of using the pandemic to curb media and attack journalists. Read more here.
