Robust civic space is essential for good governance, the rule of law, and overall civil society enabling environment, and citizens’ efforts to shape society. The outbreak of the COVID-19 crisis has additionally impacted the civil society space. The rise of nationalism, populism, and illiberalism negatively influenced civil liberties. The autocratic governments across the world have strengthened their positions as the international democratic norms weakened. During these unprecedented times, the private sector could play a significant role. Companies have the expertise, capacity, resources to enhance the protection of the civic space.
