BCSDN participated in the EU–Western Balkans Civil Society High-Level Conference organised by the EESC in Vienna under the auspices of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU. Held ahead of the upcoming EU–Western Balkans Summit, the conference brought together representatives of EU institutions, governments, CSOs, and policy experts to discuss enlargement, democratic resilience, the EU Growth Plan, and the future MFF. Representing BCSDN, Board Chair Klotilda Kosta highlighted the essential role of civil society in advancing democracy, rule of law, and fundamental rights across the Western Balkans, stressing that democratic resilience depends not only on economic growth but also on strong institutions, free media, and protected civic freedoms. Drawing on findings from BCSDN’s Monitoring Matrix, she called for stronger civic space safeguards, meaningful participation, and more predictable support for civil society within future EU funding instruments, including Global Europe and AgoraEU. BCSDN members also contributed to discussions on the next MFF, advocating for strategic partnerships, dedicated funding, and a stronger role for civil society in shaping and monitoring reforms. Many of these priorities were reflected in the conference conclusions, reinforcing the importance of civic space, meaningful participation, and sustainable support for civil society in the enlargement process.
