A new research report by Konekt, Re-thinking Community Foundations in North Macedonia, examines the emerging role of community foundations as local drivers of philanthropy and community development. The analysis shows that while initiatives such as Local Action Hubs demonstrate strong community engagement, local fundraising, and cross-sector collaboration, the overall ecosystem remains fragile and highly dependent on external support. Using the 4Cs framework—Capacity, Capability, Credibility, and Connections—the report identifies key structural gaps, including limited and unstable funding, weak governance structures, low public awareness of philanthropy, and challenges in long-term strategic planning. The withdrawal of major donors, including USAID, has further exposed vulnerabilities, forcing some initiatives to scale down operations. At the same time, examples of local giving and community mobilisation highlight untapped potential for more sustainable, locally driven models. The report emphasises the need for diversified funding, stronger governance and accountability mechanisms, and enhanced collaboration across sectors to ensure the resilience and long-term impact of community-based civil society initiatives.
