The Fundamental Rights Report 2025 paints a stark picture of the ongoing threats to fundamental rights across Europe. The report covers all 27 EU Member States as well as Albania, North Macedonia, and Serbia. With democracy under siege, the report exposes alarming trends, including a rise in violence against women and serious rights abuses at EU borders. Key factors, including disinformation, the proliferation of artificial intelligence, and incendiary rhetoric, are eroding the foundations of free and fair elections in the region. Despite the introduction of new migration and asylum policies, grave violations of migrants’ rights remain rampant, highlighted by the tragic statistic of over 3,500 individuals either drowning or going missing at sea in 2024. Gender-based violence is also reaching epidemic levels, with a shocking one in three women in the EU suffering from such abuse. Additionally, discrimination and hate crimes continue to surge, disproportionately impacting Muslim, Jewish, Black, and LGBTIQ communities. The report also raises alarms about the rising tide of online harassment and physical assaults, underscoring a critical need for urgent action to protect fundamental rights across the continent.
