The Council of Europe’s Safety of Journalists Platform has published its 2024 report, raising the alarm over Serbia’s persistent culture of impunity in attacks against journalists. The report documents a year-long campaign of threats against Dinko Gruhonjić, a journalist and media studies professor, highlighting 15 incidents including death threats, harassment, and institutional pressure—all without legal consequences. Despite multiple reports to authorities, no prosecutions have followed, reinforcing distrust in law enforcement and a permissive climate for violence against the press. The report links this inaction to broader threats faced by journalists covering sensitive issues such as student protests and the Novi Sad railway tragedy. Current events appear to confirm these concerns, as journalist Nemanja Šarović was recently attacked while filming near Pioneers` Park, after previous arrests and harassment for reporting from the same location.
