The Joint Submission of the BiH Civil Society Initiative, a coalition of 14 organizations working in various human rights fields, for the 4th Universal Periodic Review highlights ongoing human rights challenges in BiH from 2019 to 2024. Key issues include the operationalization of the National Preventive Mechanism (NPM), persistent gender inequality, and the discriminatory nature of the BiH Constitution. Furthermore, the Constitution of BiH remains discriminatory, both in terms of the participation of “others” in legislative and executive power, and in terms of gender equality. Women remain underrepresented in government, and many of the goals and activities that were set out in the Action plan to Improve the State of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms of LGBTI People in B&H for the period 2021-2024 are not implemented yet. War crimes cases have been delayed, and human rights defenders (HRDs) face violence and a lack of support. The report calls for coordinated efforts to improve conditions for people with disabilities and ensure a safer online and offline space for civil society. Read more here.
