BCSDN member Civic Initiatives has released a report addressing Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation (SLAPPs) in Serbia and their effect on freedom of expression. SLAPPs are tactics employed by powerful entities like politicians and private companies to intimidate and silence critics through prolonged and costly legal battles. The report reviews Serbia’s legal framework, examines the impact of SLAPPs on activists and media, and includes case studies. It aims to enhance recognition of SLAPPs and advocate for proper legislation to address them. The report also outlines the tactics used by plaintiffs and offers recommendations for countering these challenges. Available in Serbian and English, the report will be included as an annex to the BCSDN regional report on SLAPPs, alongside other Western Balkans country reports.
