The European Parliament finalized a legislation as they strive to secure final votes on several laws ahead of recess and the June EP elections. This includes the AI Act, the European Media Freedom Act (EMFA), the anti-SLAPP Directive, as well as the contentious Corporate Sustainable Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD). While most texts reached an agreement in 2023, the CSDDD’s reopening led to delays, raising concerns about legislative integrity. The Anti-SLAPP Directive and EMFA aim to protect media freedom, while the CSDDD mandates corporate accountability. However, the AI Act falls short in safeguarding human rights. In 2023, the EC proposed two laws: the EU Cross Border Associations Directive for CSOs’ legal framework and the Defence of Democracy Package for transparency against foreign interference. However, these proposals risk rights violations, lack clarity, and burden CSOs without clear effectiveness.
