The President of the United States has issued a memorandum directing all executive departments and agencies to withdraw from and end support for 66 international organisations and bodies, following a review mandated by Executive Order 14199 of 4 February 2025. After considering the findings of the Secretary of State and consultations with the Cabinet, the administration concluded that continued participation in a wide range of United Nations and non-UN entities was contrary to US interests. The review remains ongoing, indicating that further withdrawals may follow, while implementation for UN entities will proceed through the suspension of participation and funding to the extent permitted by law. In response, civil society groups have sharply criticised the move. CIVICUS described the Trump administration’s withdrawal from the international organisations and agreements as a major setback for people in the US and worldwide, warning that it reverses decades of multilateral cooperation on human rights, democracy, the climate crisis, and sustainable and inclusive development.
