BCSDN and members are launching a regional campaign against Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation (SLAPPs), drawing attention to how legal proceedings can be misused to intimidate, exhaust and silence critical voices. Across the Western Balkans, journalists, activists, CSOs, environmental and human rights defenders, and citizens can face abusive legal action for speaking out on matters of public interest. The effects can reach far beyond those directly targeted, as lengthy proceedings, legal costs and uncertainty can create a chilling effect, discouraging others from speaking out and participating in public debate. At the centre of the campaign is a new regional video illustrating how lawsuits can gradually build a wall around critical voices — and how stronger legal safeguards, accessible support, systematic documentation and solidarity can help dismantle it. The campaign will be rolled out in local languages through BCSDN and member organizations, raising awareness of SLAPPs and their wider impact on public participation. Find out more here.
