The Press Advertising Agency canceled the right of independent Turkish newspaper Evrensel to publish advertisements from state and public authorities. According to the outlet’s managing editor, this was a politically motivated decision targeting one of the few remaining independent media outlets in the country. He added that the state ad revenues are vital for the survival of many small and independent media in Turkey and the BIK has the authority to distribute these revenues and to cut off public advertising from any outlet that violates press ethics. It was also precised that BIK was established to use Turkish citizens’ taxes to support the media, but the country’s current government has been using it as a punishment tool. Read more here.
