The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) has placed civil society at the center of its new work programme, “Civil Society at the heart of Europe.” The EESC President, Séamus Boland, announced a people-centered vision focusing on three pillars: A Union of opportunities, security, and resilience. The programme explicitly commits to protecting democracy and civic freedoms against increasing threats, shrinking civic space, and the underfunding of CSOs. The EESC commits to acting as a catalyst for civil society participation and will actively involve the Liaison Group with European CSOs in implementing the work, positioning the Committee as a defender of civic space and democracy.
