By sharing examples of the 2021 Civicus State of Civil Society report, CIVICUS Secretary-General Ms. Lysa John points to the urgent peoples’ action against the civic space restrictions. Ms. John asserts protests have been spurred by indications that the pandemic was being used as a pretext to increase the economic hardship of ordinary people during pandemics while creating profits for politicians and private businesses. In response to governments’ restrictive measures, massive mobilizations across the countries have also been initiated. The governments’ brutality against the protests organized for better labor rights and enhanced access to public services reveals the contrary nexus between the super-rich and the politically powerful worldwide.
