In the new CIVICUS Monitor watchlist, an online platform that tracks the latest developments to civic freedoms, including the freedoms of expression, association, and peaceful assembly, across 196 countries, Slovenia has been narrowed and added to the group of countries with a recent and rapid decline in fundamental civic freedoms. In the country, the Government undermined the CSOs and journalists by funding cuts, and public insults. The right to peaceful assembly has been under threat after the Government banned protests during the pandemic. The independence of the national press agency, STA, was also targeted by the Government, which recently cut the funding to the agency and used pressure on its management. Considering all these circumstances, the Global civil society alliance CIVICUS calls on European institutions to take immediate action to address the breaches on the fundamental freedoms in Slovenia.
