In a recent interview for Oštro, Bojana Pavlović from the Serbian investigative portal KRIK discussed the strategic lawsuit against public participation (SLAPPs) filed against her and editor Stevan Dojčinović by the Judge Dušanka Đorđević. The lawsuit stems from KRIK’s project “Prosudi ko sudi,” which profiles over 50 judges involved in criminal and corruption cases, including Đorđević. The judge claims the publication of her name and professional details violates her privacy and seeks both financial damages and criminal penalties for the journalists. This case exemplifies a SLAPP, reflecting attempts at intimidation and censorship that undermine freedom of the press in Serbia. Currently ranked 98th out of 180 countries in media freedom, Serbia has numerous active SLAPP cases, with KRIK reporting 16 ongoing cases.
