The conditions for freedom of expression in Serbia have considerably worsened around the country’s recent presidential election. In the last update for the CIVICUS Monitor, BCSDN as a research partner has detailed worrying examples of threats, harassment and intimidation being used to silence critical journalists and impair investigative reporting in Serbia. In particular, female media professionals have been disproportionately targeted as the space for media freedom continues to close. The harassment of award-winning investigative journalist Dragana Pećo is an example of the serious risks investigative journalists face in conducting legitimate investigations into controversial and sensitive issues, such as corruption. In this worrisome environment and with growing fears over self-censorship among independent Serbian media outlets, the CIVICUS Monitor spoke to Dragana Pećo to find out more about the challenges journalists face in the country.
