The Council of Europe Steering Committee on Democracy (CDDEM) has launched a public consultation seeking input on the draft text of a revised Recommendation concerning the legal status of CSOs. Recognising CSOs as essential to democracy, the rule of law, and human rights through their role in promoting public awareness and participation, the committee is addressing concerns over the shrinking civic space across Europe. Recent years have seen restrictive laws and policies targeting critical voices, with increasing threats and violence against CSOs and human rights defenders. Contributions can be submitted by email until 10 September 2025. This initiative reflects ongoing efforts to strengthen protections for civil society and promote transparency and accountability across Europe. Read more here.
