The Philanthropy Europe Association (Philea), through its Journalism Funders Forum, has launched a survey to assess philanthropic engagement with media and journalism across Europe. The initiative aims to collect data on current funding levels, thematic and geographic priorities, and perceived challenges and gaps in supporting independent journalism. The findings will inform a more strategic and coordinated approach to donor engagement in the media sector, particularly in light of growing threats to press freedom and media sustainability. The survey is open to all philanthropic organisations, regardless of whether they currently fund journalism—and is available in multiple European languages. All responses will be treated confidentially. The results will feed into a public report to be released in autumn 2025. Deadline to complete the survey: 1 July 2025.
