The report reveals that only 7.2% of the world’s population now lives in countries with “Open” or “Narrowed” civic space, while 83 countries are rated “Repressed” or “Closed.” The most frequent violations are the detention of protesters, journalists, and human rights defenders; governments are widely using excessive force against peaceful demonstrations globally, alongside implementing restrictive laws and digital repression.
