Civil Society Europe is urging organizations to sign an open letter demanding the European Commission reverse its decision to withdraw the European Cross-Border Associations (ECBA) Directive. The ECBA proposal, approved by the European Parliament in 2024, would allow non-profit organizations active in at least two Member States to be recognized and operate across the EU under the same conditions as national associations. Supporters argue the Directive is essential for removing legal and administrative barriers that currently hinder cross-border cooperation, especially in border regions, and for strengthening civil society’s ability to work on shared EU challenges (e.g., civil protection, healthcare, environmental management, citizens’ participation). The open letter specifically calls on the Commission to restore the ECBA Directive to its 2026 Work Programme. The deadline for organizations to sign is January 22nd. Read more here.
