An urgent call for a systematic and institutional approach to combat foreign information manipulation and interference (FIMI) in North Macedonia was issued today at an expert meeting in the Assembly of the Republic of North Macedonia. Organized by the Parliamentary Committee on Defense and Security and the Institute of Communication Studies (ICS), the session highlighted the critical gap that threatens national security and democratic stability, especially given North Macedonia’s status as a NATO member and EU candidate. Discussions revealed significant institutional and legal weaknesses, including a lack of strategic coordination and low media literacy, concluding that a comprehensive, democratic approach involving institutions, civil society, media, and international partners is crucial for building a resilient society, with responses needing to be swift, proportionate, and transparent, aligning with NATO and EU standards.
