A new report by the Kvinna till Kvinna Foundation reveals escalating threats against women human rights defenders worldwide, based on survey responses from nearly 800 activists in 81 countries. The State of Women Human Rights Defenders 2026 shows that 69 % of respondents have faced threats and harassment, with more than half identifying state actors as perpetrators, and highlights how anti‑gender, anti‑climate and anti‑democratic forces are increasingly linked. The findings detail how shrinking civic space, financial cuts and conservative policy shifts are undermining activists’ ability to operate safely, often forcing them to reduce visibility or face legal and social obstacles. The report calls for stronger protection mechanisms, better funding practices and policies designed with local feminist expertise to safeguard defenders and ensure long‑term civic engagement.
