The Trade Union of Media of Montenegro (TUMM) has welcomed the conviction of Pljevlja Mayor Dario Vraneš for offensive remarks directed at investigative journalist Milka Tadić Mijović, noting it as an important step in addressing harmful public discourse. Trade Union of Media of Montenegro emphasised that the court recognised elements of disparagement, gender-based stereotyping, and discrimination, setting clearer boundaries for statements made by public officials. The case also highlighted the role of institutional support, as a newly established national mechanism for journalist safety provided legal assistance. At the same time, TUMM warned that online spaces are becoming increasingly unsafe for women journalists, who face frequent insults, threats, and gender-based violence, often without adequate response. The union called on institutions to act decisively in similar cases to ensure accountability and strengthen protections for media freedom and journalists’ rights. Read more here.
