Seven new reports examine civic space developments in 2025 across Bulgaria, Denmark, France, Hungary, the Netherlands, Poland and Romania. Produced under the Monitoring Action for Civic Space (MACS) project, they apply a new civil society methodology to track both progress and decline in civic freedoms. The findings point to growing concerns, including restrictions on protest rights, harassment, stigmatisation and rising regulatory pressure on civil society. The reports also highlight potential breaches of EU law and provide policy recommendations. An Early Warning and Alert System accompanies the reports to detect risks early and support timely responses. The methodology is now ready for broader use across Europe and will feed into the European Civic Forum’s 2026 Civic Space Report. Find more here.
