The report presents the results and the methodology of the Media Pluralism Monitor (MPM2020), a tool assessing the risks to media pluralism in EU members and some candidate countries. In a media ecosystem that has been rapidly evolving, particularly under the pressure of the digitalization of the information industry, rapid technological advancements have created new opportunities, but also new sources of risk for media pluralism. The MPM was revised and developed to insert the analysis of the crucial features of the digital transformation. Pending the publication of the report, an unprecedented global crisis, caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, has highlighted the role of independent media systems in democratic societies, and the risks to media pluralism connected with a state of emergency and the restrictions on freedom of expression.
