Speaking at the Civil Society Forum 2026 in Pristina, Enrico Letta, President of the Jacques Delors Institute and former Italian Prime Minister, called for the EU Single Market to become a central element of the enlargement process. Letta argued that candidate countries should benefit from closer integration into the Single Market before formal accession, bringing tangible opportunities to citizens and businesses. He highlighted the four fundamental freedoms of movement of people, goods, services and capital, alongside his proposal for a fifth freedom: the movement of knowledge. Reflecting on Europe’s changing geopolitical and economic environment, Letta stressed the need for greater European integration to address security challenges, technological disruption and financial fragmentation. He also pointed to growing momentum within the EU to strengthen the Single Market, emphasizing that closer integration would help European countries become more resilient while preserving their national identities.Find more here.
