Ahead of the 17th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP17) in Yerevan, Armenia, the Kvinna till Kvinna Foundation has published a policy brief calling for stronger implementation of gender equality commitments in biodiversity governance. Drawing on experiences from conflict-affected and environmentally vulnerable contexts, including Armenia, Moldova and Ukraine, the brief highlights the essential contribution of women’s rights organisations to biodiversity protection, climate adaptation and environmental peacebuilding, despite their limited access to funding and decision-making. It calls for gender-responsive indicators and accountability mechanisms, direct financing for women-led and grassroots organisations, and stronger protection of women environmental human rights defenders facing threats and shrinking civic space. The recommendations also stress aligning biodiversity policies with gender equality and Women, Peace and Security frameworks to ensure more inclusive and effective implementation. Read more here
